Henny comes in last in Mascot Race

VHS’s battery cage hen mascot, Henny, made her first appearance at this year’s Mascot Derby at Hastings Park. We recognized that participating in an event at a race-horse venue would raise some eyebrows (our own included) due to the obvious welfare issues from horse racing events. However, we felt this venue offered the opportunity to bring our message to a whole new audience – one that may never have considered animal welfare issues before, particularly concerning farm animals. Poor Henny came in last in her heat, and by a long mile! But then so would you if you were a battery cage hen that never got the change to exercise! All in all, it was a good experience and Henny got a chance to run free, even if it was for just a short while.
