Breakfast at city hall is going to taste even better.

As of June 1, the city's food services division will purchase only free-range eggs.

In addition, the department will give priority to purchasing pre-made products that use cage-free eggs, as long as the product is feasible and available through the city's current supplier.

According to a staff report, the decision should have little effect on the department's operations because eggs and egg products are not extensively used on the menu.

"By endorsing this resolution, the City of Burnaby will be doing our part to motivate other communities, individuals and organizations towards this responsible cause in improving conditions for egg-laying hens," states the report.
