Donate Online
To donate online through our website, click here to make a donation now. You will be transferred to a secure website operated by “Canada Helps”. Canada Helps is used by many charities throughout Canada and greatly helps small charities like ours who do not have the resources to operate their own online payment software. Canada Helps charges a nominal processing fee (2%) for completing the transaction and mailing you a tax receipt. The fee will be deducted from your donation (the same as if you were to charge the donation to your credit card). By donating online, you instantly receive your receipt electronically, which also helps VHS save expenses on processing and mailing costs. Donate By Credit Card
If you would like to charge your donation to your credit card, please call us at 604 266 9744.
We will take the information from you over the phone, and then destroy your card information immediately after the transaction has been processed. For security purposes, VHS does not keep credit card information on file or on the computer for any of our donors. When you call, please have the following information ready:
- Name on the card
- Card Number
- Expiry Date
- Amount of Gift
- Address for Tax Receipt
Donate Monthly
Monthly donors provide us with the security to plan for tomorrow as well as help animals today! Monthly donations can take the form of post-dated cheques, direct debit, credit card or you can donate monthly online. No amount is too small – it adds up quickly! We send one receipt out at the end of the year. Please call our office at 604 266 9744 to enroll in our automatic monthly donation plan.
Memorial Donations
A memorial donation is a touching way to remember a loved one, be they of the human or animal kind. We will send our beautiful memorial card to the surviving family to acknowledge your gift and as well as publish your generosity and remembrance in our newsletter. Please include contact information for yourself and for the recipient of the card.
Special Occasion Donations
If you would like to give a donation to VHS in lieu of a gift for someone, special occasion donations are a great way to say Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas or mark any other occasion in a meaningful way! We will notify your special someone of your generosity with a beautiful VHS card and acknowledge the occasion and gift in our newsletter.
Donate Investment Stock
Donating appreciated stocks, bonds and mutual fund units is a tax-effective way to donate.
Many donors are choosing to give investments to VHS. When donors sell an appreciated stock, they are required to pay a certain amount of tax on the capital gain. However, if they make a donation to VHS, thanks to the new tax rules introduced in the 2006 Federal Budget, they are exempt from capital gains tax.
Donors then receive a tax receipt for income tax purposes, based on the full market value of the securities at the time of the transfer.
To donate a stock certificate (whether it is in paper form or in a brokerage account) you need only sign a Letter of Authorization to transfer the shares. Once the stock is received into the VHS brokerage account, the value for the shares will be determined as of that date for preparation of the tax receipt.

Bequests
A gift to VHS in the form of a bequest means your compassion will continue in the years to come.
Canada’s tax laws encourage donations to charities by providing tax credits to donors that reduce the amount of tax their estate will have to pay. Bequests to the Vancouver Humane Society mean long-term stability – help for animals in the future, as well as help for them today.
You can provide instruction on the type of charitable work you wish your gift used for, or you can leave it to the Board of Directors to decide where the greatest impact can be.

Endowment Funds
Endowment Funds provide lasting security. The VHS has an endowment fund with the Vancouver Foundation, the largest community foundation in Canada. The Vancouver Humane Society/Norma Berridge Endowment Fund provides the VHS with a yearly payout of income without jeopardizing the capital. Contributions to the fund increase the income that VHS can count on yearly to continue its important work.
The original donation is kept in perpetuity, with the charity receiving only the interest earned. Please contact the Vancouver Foundation for further information.
