VHS helps animals needing emergency medical attention through our McVitie Fund*. Animal guardians are sometimes faced with unexpected and substantial veterinary costs when their animal is injured or suddenly ill. Whenever possible VHS will step in with emergency financial assistance to help cover veterinary costs and ensure an animal gets the necessary medical treatment he or she needs. Lives and limbs have been saved thanks to these interventions. Here are some "happy ending" stories about animals we've helped, with the generous assistance of the Challenge Grant issued by the Irene Joy Stewart and Florence Maud Shedden Endowment Fund for Domestic and Wild Animal Welfare.
Safeway
Safeway was in pain and in urgent need of veterinary treatment for what turned out to be megacolon, a severe blockage and enlargement of the colon. VHS helped ensure he got the prompt attention he needed and he was soon back home, where according to his guardian, he is purring again and back to his old self.

Brody
Brody, a six-month-old Chihuahua, is one of the animals VHS is helping. Brody's leg got caught in a door and required expensive orthopedic surgery. VHS launched an appeal to the cover the cost of his operation and, thanks to our generous donors, Brody is now recovering.

Ozzie
Ozzie, a one-year-old Chihuahua, not only needed hip surgery but also was homeless. VHS ensured he had his operation and now he also has a happy “forever” home. He has regained the use of his back legs and now chases his new friend Chi (another Chihuahua) around the house at full speed!

Donovan
Poor Donovan, an eight-year-old ginger tabby, fell three storeys, crushing his nose, jaw and left front arm. Amazingly, he had no broken bones but he did require a considerable amount of ongoing medical treatment that his guardian couldn’t afford. VHS helped cover the costs and Donovan is on the mend.
*The McVitie Fund was established by a VHS donor in memory of a very special ginger tabby named, of course, McVitie. He was rescued after being left to die on a beach in Portugal. McVitie was brought back to Canada and lived out the wonderful life every cat deserves, in a loving, forever home. When he passed away, his guardian established the fund to help other cats, who find themselves, through no fault of their own, needing emergency medical aid.
