Humane society recommends best ways to make 2008 a good year for our non-human friends

The Vancouver Humane Society (VHS) has issued its recommended top ten New Year’s resolutions to make life better for animals.

“Quitting smoking or going on a diet may be great resolutions,” says Bruce Passmore of VHS, “but resolving to help animals will not only make you feel better, it will make a big difference in their lives.”

  1. Don’t buy eggs from caged hens. If you choose to buy eggs, buy certified organic eggs instead. They’re guaranteed to be free range and have the highest welfare standards. (www.chickenout.ca )
  2. If you’re looking for a companion animal, adopt a homeless animal from a local shelter (and don’t buy exotic pets and animals sold in pet stores or by breeders).
  3. Eat less meat, starting with one meat-free dinner a week, or better yet, go vegetarian!.
  4. Get your dog/cat spayed or neutered and tell everyone who has a pet to do the same.
  5. Don’t patronize zoos, animal circuses, rodeos or any event exploiting animals.
  6. Don’t buy fur – even fur trim.
  7. Switch to cruelty-free and non-animal tested products.
  8. Become a supporter of an animal charity.
  9. Report animal cruelty to the BC SPCA 604-879-7343
  10. Do something kind for animals every day (take your neighbour’s dog for a walk; write a letter to the editor supporting animals; hug your cat!)
