Humane society recommends best ways to make 2007 a good year for our non-human friends
The Vancouver Humane Society (VHS) has issued its recommended top ten New Year’s resolutions to make life better for animals.
“Quitting smoking or going on a diet may be great resolutions,” says VHS executive director Debra Probert, “but resolving to help animals will not only make you feel better, it will make a big difference in their lives.”
- Don’t buy eggs from caged hens. If you choose to buy eggs, buy certified organic eggs instead. They’re guaranteed to be free range and have the highest welfare standards.
- Adopt a homeless animal from the local shelter (and steer clear of exotic pets or animals sold in pet stores or by breeders).
- Get your dog/cat spayed or neutered and tell every pet owner you know to do the same.
- Don’t patronize any zoos, animal circuses, rodeos or any event exploiting animals.
- Give a vegetarian diet a try, starting with one meat-free dinner a week.
- Don’t buy fur – even fur trim.
- Switch to cruelty-free and non-animal tested products.
- Become a supporter of an animal charity.
- Report animal cruelty to the BC SPCA
- Do something kind for animals every day (Take your neighbour’s dog for a walk; write a letter to the editor supporting animals; hug your cat!)
